Debian GNU/Linux Development & Support Status

This site provides an overview of the official development and support status of the recent Debian releases.

With the Debian release life cycle, users can expect 3 years of full support for each release and 2 years extra LTS support.

Debian release branches

Debian has three release distributions in active maintenance: “stable”, “testing”, and “unstable”.

At DebianSupport, we generally recommend that our customers strive to use the Debian stable branch. However, we understand that there might be use cases or circumstances in which using the stable version is not possible or desired.

Debian Stable

The “stable” distribution contains the latest officially released version of Debian.

This distribution distribution is the most popular distribution to be used in production systems.

Debian Testing

The “testing” distribution contains packages are on track to be accepted into the “stable” release. Generally, testing contains more recent versions of the included software packages compared to stable. While the software in testing is newer than stable, it is generally more mature than in “unstable”.

Using “testing” for production systems is discouraged. It is somewhat popular for development and experimental systems as well as some desktop systems.

Debian Unstable

The “unstable” distribution is under active development. Compared to stable and testing, the software in unstable is bleeding edge.

Using unstable for production systems is highly discouraged. Expect things to break.

Debian Legacy Support

At DebianSupport, we provide commercial support for both actively maintained versions of the Debian stable, testing and unstable branches as well as commercial legacy support for older unmaintained versions.
